WESTERN U.S. MINING SETTLEMENT, PROBABLY CALIFORNIA GOLD
AMBROTYPE
This setting is consistent with the large body of daguerreotypes and ambrotypes of California Gold mining. In fact, go to our ‘SOLD’ section and the Diamond Springs California ambrotype is quite similar. This scene depicts five miners on a makeshift
platform on a pile of rubble in front of a barn like community building. There are logs everywhere, in fact, a huge one in the foreground. The cabins which serve as homes are scattered on the hillside.

APPEARANCE
|
|
Exceptional content. A real look into the mining life. Great details. Good contrast. While a slightly dark image, it’s completely satisfying in the hand. When tilted three large spots where the black backing has flaked off are obvious. |

CONDITION
|
|
This is an ambrotype where the black has been painted over the emulsion.
There does not appear to be emulsion loss anywhere,
but on the right side where the black backing has fallen off,
we can see through to the black velvet below. Light mat abrasions. |
