Li Junyi's story is that of an outsider in art. Let's first establish that he was a professional photographer. In 2010 - 2011, Li decided to make daguerreotypes. He had no training whatsoever. He got his instructions via the internet and he procured all of his supplies online. He had no teacher and no mentor. He's completely self-taught. Experts mention the silver tones in his daguerreotypes. Each is inscribed on reverse with his name, in both English and Chinese. Each is dated.

Li is still a professional photographer, but no longer makes daguerreotypes. His daguerreotypes are truly precious, as well as unique.

This surreal daguerreotype was made in 2011. It features cars and goldfish in a cityscape. One wonders if Li Junyi was prescient on climate change. It's an odd juxtaposition, and it works.
