MAN IN NAPOLEONIC POSE BY JAMES PRESLEY BALL,
AFRICAN-AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHER
"Ball’s Great Daguerreian Gallery of the West" was one of the grandest photographic studios of the West. He eventually partnered with Alexander Thomas, and utilized the famous painter, Robert Scott Duncanson as his colorist for four years. All three men were African-Americans.
Daguerreotypes with original seals are harder and harder to come by, but for collectors of specific photographers, it’s the surest way to know you are not being deceived.
This is the classic Ball illumating the face so we can see all of the detail. The man poses with his hand inside of his coat, which was (and is) referred to as the ‘Napoleonic pose.’
Brass mat is in very good condition and reads “J.P. BALL’ lower left. ‘CINCINNATI’ is lower right.
